Italian Wines ΓΆβ?¬β?? Anthilia Sicilia with: Ciro Pirone

With Ciro Pirone

Throughout its history Sicily has usually been controlled by greater powers, including Roman and Spanish. Although today it is part of the Republic of Italy, it has its own distinct culture. Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Donnafugata grew out of the Rallo family's commitment to Sicily, always believing in the extraordinary enological potential of the land. With 150 years of tradition in producing premium wines, wine producers Giacomo Rallo and his wife, Gabriella, launched a new production project in 1983 and called it Donnafugata.

The name Donnafugata, literally “woman in flight,” refers to the history of the Habsburg queen Maria Carolina who was the consort of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon.  In the initial years of the 19th century, she fled Naplesand found refuge a few miles from the estate’s vineyards.  The history inspired the effigy of the head of a woman with her hair tossed by the wind that dominates the label of every bottle of Donnafugata.

Technical notes: The wine shows a precise personality linked with extremely sweet and elegant fruity sensations and notes of yellow peaches and plums. On the palate sapidity and softness unite.

Since graduating from the Istituto Alberghiero (Hotel and Restaurant Management school) di Salerno in 1994, Ciro has traveled and worked in Italy, England and the US. Wine is always been an incredible passion for him, especially because growing up in Italy, wine was always a very important part of  family meals, and it was there he learned to respect and love it.Although Italy is always in his heart, in 1999 he moved to the USA permanently.  In Boston he continued his wine studies at Boston University, the International Sommelier Guild and WSET.Currently he has the position of Director of Italian Wines for Horizon Beverage Group.
